ABSTRACT

Once the initial outline design layout has been completed and approved by the client, the designer can begin to work out the detailed choice and arrangement of hard landscape materials: the fencing and walling types, paving patterns, edgings and street furniture. Much of the early detailed hard landscape design work may be carried out before working drawings are commenced as it is often important to determine, for example, the fencing types, wall design and the paving patterns required, at any time from even the sketch design stage onwards. As with the early concept design stage, the starting point for choosing and detailing hard landscape elements must take account of the context and mood of both the setting and that intended for the site itself.
