ABSTRACT

Enough has been said throughout this book about landscapes being subject to change, and that the perceptions of landscapes change at least equally quickly, that it seems logical to finish by discussing the future and identifying some of the major shifts currently developing in landscape management and where they might be going. The drivers for these trends derive from all three of the planks of sustainable development – the ecological, the economic and the social – and also the governmental, for stable and good governance is often usefully considered as a fourth plank (Council of Europe, 2008).
