ABSTRACT
The demand for air travel has been growing rapidly in most parts of the world, but the capacity of airports to handle this demand has been expanding less rapidly. The result is growing pressure on this capacity. Sometimes this is met by increasing delays – this is the case with many airports in the US. Alternatively, administrative means can be designed which keep actual demand for an airport at a level which can be handled at moderate delay. This is an approach which has been in operation in most countries other than the US. The system which most countries choose to adopt is the IATA Slot Allocation system. In this chapter, we focus on how this system works.
