ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors address flight crews’ use of force against an aggressor on an aircraft operated in the United States. The authors apologize to international readers who will notice that this section takes on a distinctive American perspective to the legal ramifications of self-defense on an aircraft. This is because both the authors are American, live in the United States and have had experience in this country’s use of force laws» They have chosen to address this subject from their personal backgrounds. Although, this chapter addresses the laws of the United States, the application of many of the use of force principles expressed in this chapter could also apply to other countries throughout the world. The authors encourage erewmembers from around the world to leam the use of force laws of their own countries, and how those laws affect their ability to defend themselves on the aircraft.
