ABSTRACT

Every parent fears that sooner or later the day will come when they will hand over the keys of the family car to their child. Sooner than you know that day arrives. Junior has his license and cannot wait to hit the road. “Can I have the car tonight, please, – pleaseeeeeee,” he says with dramatic passion. Reluctantly you pass the keys to your offspring and out the door he goes with those famous words flowing from your mouth, “BE CAREFUL!” No sooner does the door close behind him leaving you to think: Did I show him everything he needs to know? Can he handle the driving conditions? Is he ready? and – Am I ready for this? The next thing you know the phone is ringing and as you pick it up you hear the sobs of your young son saying he just had an accident and the car is wrecked! Just as you are about to ask if anyone is hurt, you hear your name being called and – realize you have been dreaming. You sit up! Begin to sweat as you look over at your preteen sitting on the floor across the room watching the football game on the TV and eating a bag of popcorn, he’s OK you think to yourself as a sense of relief comes over you.
