ABSTRACT

Reading a story in the newspaper the other day, I learned about a little girl 3 years old who was able use the telephone to save her mother’s life. It seems the little girl’s mother had suffered an aneurysm and lay unconscious on the kitchen floor. The 3-year-old, seeing that there was something terribly wrong with her mother, tried to wake her up. The little girl started to cry and went to the telephone. Climbing up on a chair she was able to reach the telephone and push the three magic buttons – 911. How did this little 3-yearold know how to handle this emergency? Apparently her mother had taught her how to dial 911. Once the operator answered the call, she kept the little girl on the phone, summoned help, and directed the emergency response vehicles to the address traced from the phone call. The paramedics arrived in a matter of minutes, administered emergency treatment and rushed the mother to the hospital where surgeons performed life-saving surgery. The happy ending to the story is that the little girl’s mother is home safe and recovering from her ordeal. The little girl is receiving all kinds of media attention and apparently has no idea what she really did except to say, “Mommy taught me!”
