ABSTRACT

E^DON'S airports-that is to say, aerodromes which have been used by scheduledair services since the start of civil aviation in 1919-have had an eventful history. The following account is concerned primarily with the nine aerodromes near London which have handled scheduled commercial services during these 38 years.1 It does not seek to record the history of all London's aerodromes, of which there have been something lite seventy within 25 miles of Hyde Park Comer. Less than a third of this number remain in operation today, and only two, London Airport (at Heathrow) and Croydon, arc used by scheduled airlines. A third, Gatwkk, is now undergoing extensive development and is expected to replace Croydon and to be again handling scheduled traffic from 1958.
