ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the many variables which so far have not been explored but which impact on the controller every day. Firstly the area of stress and its management will be addressed and will include a section regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Following this topic the problems of sleep and fatigue will be considered and the issues of shift work and the consequences for controllers and their colleagues. The area of risk management is covered in terms of the roles and responsibilities of the organisation and the issues of systemic failure in 'loss of life' disasters.
