ABSTRACT

The opening of the new airport at Pudong in September 1999 marked a new era for Shanghai's aviation industry. For the first time in a decade, the acute capacity constraints at the older Hongqiao airport were lifted. The airport at Hongqiao had a capacity of 9.6 million passengers but in 2000 it handled 12.5 million passengers. The SPIA, on the other hand, has four main parallel long-distance runways that are 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, and two short-distance and stand-by side-wind runways. Little is known about the commodity breakdown of domestic air cargo and people focus on international cargo. The latter is necessarily reported to customs so some data is always available - if only to select users. The East China region has six provinces and is economically stronger than North China. The provinces are Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shandong.
