ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Guangzhou as an aviation hub. Zhuhai International Airport only has a small number of aircraft movements and has the lowest passenger throughput and cargo throughput. If not for its international status, there would be no reason for people to pay any special attention to it. Though it is the second largest airport in the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou is still deficient in many ways. Its service quality is still below par and it lacks sufficient capacity in terms of route coverage, flight frequency and airport cargo handling. Central and South China is an economically powerful region but much of the economic growth and foreign trade are concentrated in the south. The companies involved import components through Hong Kong and then re-export or transship the great majority of their end products, again via Hong Kong. The airport itself has not been a viable business and has had trouble breaking even financially.
