ABSTRACT

This chapter presents demographic trends and the position of older people in the labour market. It discusses the knowledge of demographic and market conditions as the basis for understanding and assessing the retirement and employment policy in Slovenia. The world trend of an ageing population, particularly in the developed world, poses a question of an unfavourable position of older people in the labour market. Long-term demographic trends of the ageing population in Slovenia may result in a shortage of labour force and strongly affect the Slovenian economy. Labour force structure shows that there are more and more older people who are required to prolong their work activity. The working age population is an age group from which persons in employment are recruited, and who actively contribute to the national product. Demographic trends and economic movements in the 1990s affected the position of older people in the labour market in Slovenia. The population of Slovenia is ageing rather rapidly.
