ABSTRACT

An organisation’s most valuable asset is its workforce. The scope of addictive problems is such that it is not whether an organisation can afford to address the matter; it cannot afford not to do so. The motto ‘good health is good business’ facilitates acceptance of the rationale for vigilance regarding risk factors from alcohol and drugs to which the respective policies are key. The WHO (1980) defined health as ‘a state of mental, physical, and social well being’. It dictates how the individual functions in the personal, occupational and community domains, all of which are relevant in considering the significance of problem drinking and the misuse of drugs in a particular organisation.
