ABSTRACT

What lasting impact has the X Case had on law and political culture? As we have seen, the events of 1992 shifted the construction of 'the people's' attitude to abortion in the press and the Oireachtas. The state had come under intense criticism in 1992, not only for its violation of familial autonomy, but also for its relationship with the anti-abortion lobby, and its moral partiality. Abortion decisions were now viewed, through the prism of parental decision making, as morally complex. The 'pro-life' nation was now not simply anti-abortion, but anti-abortion on demand.
