ABSTRACT

We are considering managers and management in general, seeking out their highest common factors, and cannot discuss here in detail the peculiarities of every class. No doubt, the qualities needed to manage, say, the Eddystone lighthouse have little in common with those looked for when appointing the Governor of the Bank of England – whatsoever metaphors may be thought up of rays of hope and darkening nights.
