ABSTRACT

This is not a ‘flashy’ academic tome. It makes no great philosophic or intellectual point. But then it was never intended to. This is a workaday, user-friendly survey of the men and women who labour long and hard at the coalface of commercial aviation – the pilots. It is written in an accessible manner. Jargon – especially sociological jargon – has been kept to a minimum. Technical and sociological terms are explained. There is even a definition of sociology (see below).
