ABSTRACT

Many public sector operators have greater exposure to reputation risk than private sector corporations. Stakeholders in public services tend to be more vocal because they have contributed financially and this gives them a right to complain. The reputation of the Home Office, and thus the government, with the general public is at risk through pursuing a policy known to have widespread resistance. Reputation risk mitigation depends on finding and communicating a benefit to the card holder so that people willingly carry the card. Hampshire County Council is one of the first county councils to place reputation on their corporate risk register. The BBC needs to exploit the values of trust, reliability and accessibility inherent in its reputation among the British public as an 'auntie'. Reputation among rival water companies will have suffered to some degree as the fine was a record for the industry reflecting the dissatisfaction of the regulator.
