ABSTRACT

Transport Policy Introduction The research reported in this volume is primarily an historical study of the ways in which everyday mobility has changed over the past century. Using a variety of research methods, based mainly on the collection of in-depth life histories from respondents in four cities, we have examined changes in the journey to work since circa 1900, and shifts in everyday mobility (especially of children) since the 1940s. We have also demonstrated the ways in which the experience of everyday mobility has changed over the life course of people currently in their 60s, and have explored the changing attitudes of travellers to new transport technologies and infrastructures.
