ABSTRACT
The carriage of the royal mail by the town posts depended upon the provision of suitable horses and of riders being available at short notice by day and night. Speed was important and security required that packets were delivered unopened. Most letters from merchants and the public were handled by other means. This chapter looks at the problems which arose in providing the available services.
