ABSTRACT

Statistics of costs for the Tudor and early Stuart posts begin in 1558 with the accounts of the Audit and Exchequer. Before that more random information can be found in Campbell,1 State Papers Domestic and Foreign Henry VIII, and in the Trevelyan Papers2 which contain extracts from the Household books of Henry VIII. Stone3 has prepared tables of daily wages for the posts after 1558 taken from the Audit Office rolls and Fowler4 drew up tables of annual costs from the Exchequer rolls after 1590. Dr Stone kindly gave permission to draw on his research and Mrs Fowler has done the same for tables compiled by her late husband. The figures I give are approximate as some additional allowances were made from time to time.
