ABSTRACT

This chapter considers Kwame Nkrumah's biographical background, his career, and then his writings and contributions. It analyzes his contributions to determine their long-lasting value and validity. Kwame Nkrumah was born Francis Nwia Kofie into the Akan tribe in Nkroful located in the Western Province of the Gold Coast. Nkrumah secured a position as a teacher at a Catholic junior school in Elmina. Nkrumah was instrumental in organizing the African conference in New York to adopt a resolution to push for African independence. Paul Robeson was involved in this effort and influenced Nkrumah. Nkrumah was a prolific writer in the areas of politics and economics as it pertained to Africa. Nkrumah's major theories center on the concept of neocolonialism/imperialism – economic under-development, in a nutshell. Nkrumah's insistence on a united Africa is the same unity concept that runs through the African-American community today.
