ABSTRACT

How do children learn to walk? By doing it, falling over, getting up and trying again until they are successful. How can adults help children to walk? Giving them lectures on locomotion, muscle tone and balance probably doesn’t help much. What does help is providing a good environment for walking (a safe place for mistakes, a few things to hold on to) and plenty of encouragement. The fact is, when it comes to teaching a child how to walk, you can’t do the learning for her – she has to do it for herself.
