Merely Mothers Perpetuating Patriarchy? Women's Grassroots Organizations in the Western Cape 1980 to 1990

Women as mothers represent the epitome of difference from men, for only women as mothers can reproduce the next generation of citizens. Women's roles as mothers link them directly to the sphere of the family. This very close connection with the private sphere has been seriously criticized in Western feminism as reinscribing the private sphere that prevents women's political agency, into the concept of citizenship.
