ABSTRACT

Thus, in 1801, the India Museum, with accommodation in the London offices of the company, was formally launched. It proved a popular venue, exhibits ranging from the famous Babylonian Stone to Tipu's Tiger (first displayed in 1808) but always with a strong emphasis on natural history. Throughout the first half ofthe nineteenth century the India Museum grew, though with general acceptance that its premises and display processes did little to enhance the serious study of the culture and products of the Indian subcontinent (Ray, 1982).
