ABSTRACT

Dear Sir, I am happy to inform Your Excellency that on Friday last I was sufficiently fortunate to fmd sculptures at Nimrod similar to those at Khorsabad ... After opening a tunnel about fifteen feet in length I found a

wall with sculptures. I was proceeding to dig along this wall when a person from the Pasha requested me to stop the excavations. I had then only uncovered five tab lets. One representing a combat with warriors in chariots, a second, the siege of a city, both designed and executed with considerable spirit; another slab, on which there are four sculptures, is only partly uncovered; it is reversed and contains, as far as I could see, a sea or river scene, a king or warrior on horseback, and several figures. Each tab let is divided by cuneiform inscriptions well preserved. The marble has been damaged by fire and is cracked in some places, but the sculptures could be removed with little care and are weIl worth sending to England.
