In 1854, he published the printed edition of his collection's catalogue. The listing in his printed catalogue was supplemented by manuscript additions, and among the details recorded for some items were the provenance and contextual information about the find's loeation. This detail was recognised by scholars contemporary with Smith as making the collection of 'outstanding scientific

value'. It mainly consisted of artefacts related to London history, but also included material from elsewhere in England, as well as items from the Continent. The material's chronology ranged from 3000 BC to post-medieval.
