ABSTRACT

The jugs and china pieces collector This collector emerged throughout the 1993 Contemporary Collecting in Britain Survey. She scored herself as female, between fifty-six and sixty-five, white and living in a big city suburb. The occupation of the main wage-eamer in the family was a local govemment officer. She is not living with a partner, but does have children. She says that her self-identity as a collector came to her gradually. In her replies, the notion of the collection as the embodiment of family identity and sentiment comes through very clearly. The survey showed that most ofwhat this collector says is characteristic of many female collectors.
