Foucault s Pendulum is set in the present, and embraces themes of the museum, numerology, the wisdom of the cabala, occult practices, computer technology, publishing, and the Templars, all theme tunes of contemporary popular intellectualism. The hero's name is Casaubon, a deliberate echo of Casaubon who demonstrated that the Hermetic literature was not written in ancient (pre-Roman) Egypt.
