ABSTRACT

During 1993 a substantial survey of collecting habits, the Contemporary Collecting in Britain Survey, was carried out. The basis of the survey was the mailing to 1,500 randomly chosen adults in Britain (but not Northem Ireland) of a questionnaire; the techniques of mailing followed those of the Total Design Method. The survey was very successful, and achieved a 57 per cent return rate, giving a base broad enough for general conclusions to be drawn.
