ABSTRACT
Gaius Octavius Augustus (63 BC-AD 14) became the first Emperor of Rome, who brought the city and the empire from the chaos of civil war to a system of ordered government (Shorter 1991: 1). He developed an interest in public and private collecting alike, and his activities and choices were determined by political reasons along with personal interests.
