ABSTRACT

The term mouseion - 'museum' - refers to a shrine devoted to the Muses1. This was a common tradition in the Greek world (see, for instance Pausanias, 9.27ff), where they were cult centres with occasionally a funeral association (Fraser, 1972: 313). More often, though, they had literary connections and they formed the focus of circles for the study of literature and especially of the Homeric epics. The exact arrangement of those 'museums' is not clear, and the presence of an actual temple is highly doubtful.
