ABSTRACT

During the Republic the contents of temples and public buildings were under the responsibility of the censors and aediles. The censors were responsible for the cataloguing and distribution of the res sacrae ('sacred things'); they also had to prepare lists of the contents of the buildings. The aediles, on the other hand, had the general supervision of the buildings, which means that they were responsible for the maintenance of the buildings and the supervision of the custodians, the aeditui. They also had responsibility for dedications in public places.
