ABSTRACT

Why did Plato think that philosophy was important? Why did he think that there must be a connection between philosophy and science, before one can see that science is a form of knowledge? If Plato thought that this was a matter of arriving at the philosophical foundations, the rock on which all science rested, then I think he was mistaken. But his insistence on the connection between science and other forms of discourse is important. It has to do with Plato’s insistence on the reality of discourse and the reality of discussion, especially.
