ABSTRACT

The theatre is set in the round, with audience on all four sides in raked seating. At each of the stage’s corners is the opening of a large pipe, and in the stage’s center is a large grated drain. A few random objects are scattered around, but otherwise the stage is empty. After a moment, water gushes from each of the four pipes, filling the stage. The water is dirty, and carries debris: clothing, household items of varying size, shoes, bits of plants and trees, and four humans. As the water slowly drains away, these four slowly begin wringing themselves out. IMOGEN is laughing. While she speaks, the other three sift through the material on stage; communicate wordlessly to one another about food and other concerns; and listen for the water’s return with escalating concern.
