ABSTRACT

I attended a course in London at a famous eye hospital, and as is customary with such courses there was an evening of drinks and canapes included so the delegates and lecturers could get to know each other. To my delight a famous hero of uveitis was present and over some slightly sour wine I attempted to tell him my theory of the recent advances in uveitis being akin to the Wild West of America being slowly settled, roads and railways built and eventually counties and states organised so that slowly piece by piece order was being brought to disorder. I emphasised the fact that for now there was still much disagreement among the most influential people in the specialty about where the borders should run as well as the best locations for the main transport routes to California. He drank his wine and dismissed my theory out of hand. ‘It's already settled’ he said. ‘Everybody knows what the eventual shape of the nation will be in your example. The only thing keeping uveitis specialists from making real gains is the arrogance of so many of the key people in thinking that their way is the only way while all along there is a right way of doing things under all the egotism’. This statement intrigued me and I asked him that if there was indeed a ‘correct’ way of doing things what was that way? He looked down at his wine glass for a second, hesitated and looked directly at me. ‘My way’ he said, and laughed.
