ABSTRACT
A skillful use of imagery does much more than provide clarity and vividness to writ ing. Used well, these devices can add richness, texture, and interest to prose that might otherwise be bald, sterile, even boring. Beautiful and thought provoking, the devices in this chapter are all subtypes of metaphor, providing additional powerful tools for effec tive writing.
