ABSTRACT

Light is remarkable: being electromagnetic radiation, it holds a duality, with its waves and particles called 'photons'. Gesture is an essential part of music-making, engrained in us all, whether we participate in music as a performer, teacher, learner, or listener. Gesture is so deeply a part of rehearsing and performing music that in some styles and genres, a member of the group, usually themselves a non-playing or non-singing member, typically steers the expressive, dynamic, and temporal characteristics of the performance likely the conductor. Language has the potential to affect the quality of learning with younger students, as well, as a corollary of behaviour management. In the absence or relative absence of sight, teaching entails offering experiences that can be apprehended through other senses. Louisa considered touch to be instinctive in visually impaired people, who she described as 'explorers through touch'.
