ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses disciplinary actions. Some deans are unclear about the importance of maintaining clear separation between performance evaluations and behavioral evaluations that could lead to disciplinary action. Public officials outside of the university and political leaders listen to these whining excuses and start trying to figure out how they can get rid of tenure in the schools and universities. The dean sometimes has the awkward responsibility of letting senior unproductive faculty members know that they are expected to fulfill their contractual obligations to the same extent as others. By consistently responding to faculty activity reports in an honest and responsible manner the dean can encourage lagging senior faculty members to improve their contribution to the college. Most disciplinary problems are long-term problems and administrators should not feel they have to solve them before the faculty member is tenured or within any other timeframe.
