A focus group consists of about 8 to 12 participants who meet as a group with a moderator who leads the group discussion. The advantages of focus groups over one-onone interviews and the limitations of focus groups are as follows:

Typically, the moderator has a list of questions or specific topics to be presented to the group, which is called a protocol. Table B.1 shows protocol topics and questions used in a qualitative study of stress among male and female professional managers.2
