ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with examining the different reasons for leaving computer staff from the organisation, discussing which of these are 'acceptable', and also examining courses of action which can be taken to ensure that 'unacceptable' reasons no longer apply. It is commonly found that leavers give one reason only as their explanation for their decision to leave. There is very seldom only one reason, however, unless it is 'general dis-satisfaction' which tells nothing, and in compiling a list of the usual reasons we must recognise that a decision to look for another job usually results from a number of contributing factors. At a senior level in the data processing department a lack of confidence may be expressed as 'a personality clash', although such clashes are almost invariably the result of disagreement on policy rather than incompatibility of personality. Such a disagreement may not be capable of resolution and must be accepted as an 'acceptable' reason for leaving.
