ABSTRACT

Like any other manager, the data processing manager needs to be something of a paragon, and any list of desirable attributes has the appearance of a specification of perfection. As with the data processing manager, it is found that the sum of the desirable characteristics for a systems analyst results in a paragon. Technical ability is of prime importance for the programmer, who must have a thorough understanding of the tools of his trade. Good operating of a computer is not possible without good teamwork and operators should be selected as much for this ability to play their part as members of a team. One staff characteristic which cannot be overemphasised and is required by every member of the data processing department is helpfulness. This applies, of course, in all service organisations, but it applies particularly to the data processing department for a reason which should be well understood by all members of the department.
