ABSTRACT

The last few years have seen quite important developments in the value and type of fringe benefits that are offered by many organizations to their employees. Some of the major employers in the hotel and catering industry have not been slow to join this trend and nowadays the total number of fringe benefits available to a number of the industry's employees is considerable. Fringe benefits are intended primarily to motivate employees to give better performance and to encourage them to stay with the employer. In considering fringe benefits it is vital to recognize that what may be considered an 'incentive' or 'motivator' today may lose its motivating effect with time. This chapter deals with the major benefits that can be offered to employees. Fringe benefits play a vital part in an employer's personnel policy as the nature of all the benefits offered influences considerably the type of employees who will be attracted to the employer and who will stay.
