ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the overall discussion, focusing on some practical implications of this work in relation to mafia clans and Italian soccer. It is evident from this book’s analysis that corruption and the mafias’ presence in soccer are not an exception in a contrarily virtuous Italian socio-political and economic system and tend to be a reflection of the ‘system’ itself. Therefore, it is inconceivable that Italian soccer should be left unchanged; it is in need of a profound reform. This final chapter will discuss how the governance of Italian soccer needs to address some of the current shortcomings that make the whole industry prone to mafia power and corrupted interests. These range from strategies of prevention and ‘containment’ of mafia infiltration to considerations about the weaknesses of the soccer field more generally.
