ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the aspects of being particular relevance to faculty and faculty development within an internationalizing higher education: being resilient, mindful, and resourceful; being open to change, dialogue, and reciprocal learning; and being critical of own practice and established approaches. These 'personal qualities' are enablers with regard to all areas within the adaptation of Nelson Laird's Diversity Inclusivity Framework. Internationalization is reshaping academic practice and the contexts in which faculty live and work. These changes place new demands on those working with diverse students, diverse colleagues, and in diverse contexts, requiring personal qualities to support the individual and the development of his practice. Engaging in professional dialogue among intercultural communities of practice can only lead to reciprocal learning when faculty are open to change. Faculty working across cultures, whether based at home or overseas, are caught in daily interactions with diverse others.
