ABSTRACT

This chapter contextualizes previous discussions to the practice of academic development within an internationalizing and multicultural higher education. Across the reconfiguring contexts of post-national universities, academic development necessarily engages diverse practitioners with diverse faculty in diverse contexts, and so itself becomes intercultural practice. The chapter explores intercultural academic development (IAD), defined as: A critical, anti-hegemonic, and empowering enterprise that seeks to facilitate reciprocal learning within international and multicultural communities of academic practice, in an ethos of interculturalism directed towards the advancement of learning and teaching practice that better enable faculty, students, and graduates to lead lives they have reason to value in a multicultural and globalizing world. IAD for empowerment requires holding and building qualities such as resilience and reciprocity as much as knowledge or skills. The flows, uncertainties, challenges, and opportunities of globalization are reshaping the world into which our students graduate.
