ABSTRACT

Social interchange which is rewarding can have the effect of establishing positive attitudes between interactants which in turn can lead to lasting friendship and even love. It is important at the outset to enunciate the relationship between attraction and attractiveness: attractiveness is considered one of the main causes of attraction. It is widely acknowledged that physically attractive individuals are at an advantage in our society. In addition to attributing favourable characteristics to attractive people we also react more positively towards them. It has also been found that people give more help to those whose clothing indicates attitudes, tastes and beliefs similar to their own. Research has found that the advantages which accrue from being deemed an attractive individual begin at an early age. The research studies summarised in this chapter show quite clearly that attractive and unattractive people are perceived and treated differently in many aspects of their social and professional lives.
