ABSTRACT

The field of multicultural early childhood education, with its research, theories and practice, has expanded and supported the values and parameters for young children growing up with an appreciation of human differences, and the nonjudgmental ability to form friendships across cultures. Multicultural education is desirable for young children, and multicultural learning materials such as multicultural dolls, music, games and books are frequently included in classroom learning environments. Teachers in the infant classroom really struggled with what this meant for their children and with how babies could even begin to be part of a school that was “going global”. The foundational skills for global competence were definitely being developed because a sense of self and bonding to significant adults is essential before being able to relate to other people. Children’s curiosity was peaked though intensive investigations about animals, enabling their neurological development to steadily increase and extend structurally.
