ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present a discussion of logistic regression-an alternative to discriminant anal-

ysis-and also discuss multiple regression for use in certain situations. Logistic regression has the same

basic purpose as discriminant analysis-the classification of individuals into groups. It is, in some ways,

more flexible and versatile than discriminant analysis, although mathematically, it can be quite a bit more

cumbersome. In this chapter, we also examine how logistic regression seeks to identify a combination of

IVs-which are limited in few, if any, ways-that best predicts membership in a particular group, as meas-

ured by a categorical DV.
