ABSTRACT

The subject of discharge of emotions has been at the center of many debates and incorporated into psychological discourse and practice. Although Aristotle developed his theory of catharsis on theater, it has been applied to other areas of human existence and can be applied to the field of sport. What type of a channel is sport when it comes to discharging our emotions, whether as players or as spectators? In what ways do and can sport serve as a means of dealing with our emotions? This chapter examines how sport can be construed as an arena of catharsis.
