ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the state of the art regarding social, mainly sociological, research on embodied knowledge. It is focused on the theoretical approaches, studied sports disciplines and research methods themselves that have been used so far. The chapter deals with qualitative sports, embodiment’s studies and embodied methodologies. Its scientific literature review reveals that the concept of ‘embodied knowledge’ is the most common, that the phenomenological approach is the most dominant, that ethnography (including autoethnography) has been used the most often to gather data and that combat sport, martial arts and dance have been the most often explored sports.
