ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a review of the state of the art demand modeling techniques are used to delve into critical issues raised by the question of telecommuting. It investigates the benefits and costs of telecommuting, in an effort to provide concrete evidence to inform the private sector's adoption decision process and the public sector's policy design. The public sector has demonstrated an increasing interest in the potential of telecommuting, strongly supporting its adoption in numerous public policy statements. The book discusses the proposed modeling framework and compares it with the state of the art. It provides an assessment of the level of adoption of telecommuting and an evaluation of various public and private policies intended to foster the adoption process. The book describes the surveys used to collect the data to estimate the proposed models and presents the descriptive statistics of the sample.
